USA Today Crossword Puzzle Grants False Sense Of Intelligence DES MOINES, IA—Forty-five minutes after sitting down with a cup of coffee and the USA Today crossword, local window fashions salesman Tom... USA Today has the easiest crossword of any newspaper I know, although one of South Florida's regional papers, near Fort Lauderdale, readily claims second place.

Too Many Internship Options

It's official: I'm interning with the ACLU of Northern California and the Commonwealth Club in SF this semester, and I'm really excited. I'll be taking the train up to the city each day, and I qualify for the disabled discount! Not because I use a wheelchair, obviously, but because of the poverty the system forces us to live on. I'm cancelling the copyediting course at Berkeley because it's too much work, given my new schedule, and because it's not feasible to get there. I am, however, taking courses at Foothill in order to defer my student loans.

Evangelicals Officially Pre-Historic

A new study out of a university in Pennsylvania confirms that same-sex unions were sanctioned in Medieval Europe, making today's evangelical Christians look even more fossilized in ignorance than they already do.

Gonzales is Going...Going...Gonz!

what a relief. the Bush administration appears to be shedding misanthropes at an increasing rate, these days. if only the top two would take the hint and do the same.

This Congressman from Georgia's 8th District missed the day in class when they discussed what "separation of church and state" means.

Kitty Flushes Woes Down Toilet

In The Midst of Winter

In the darkest of nights. I don't remember the exact details, but this is what I got from one of Elie Wiesel's books: Some concentration camp prisoners were forced to watch the execution of some innocent children, presumably Jewish. Things were so dire and so desperate and so depressing at that point that one of the prisoners cried out "why has our Lord forsaken us? where is He?" Another prisoner pointed to the young bodies swaying from the gallows and said, "He is there." What I take from this is that sometimes things are so bad that there is no longer any God or Savior; that the Holocaust was so horrible and so large that it killed the god of the Jews, and they were left completely alone.

I Can't Stand Iran

They put a 16 year old woman to death because she was raped by two [former] Iranian Revolutionary Guards. She was 13 at the time of the crime. She was accused of "immorality."

Stephen Colbert Is Not A Black Woman

The Diana Chronicle[r]

I don't like Joe Biden's haircut. By the way, I would much rather see a political debate take place in a baseball stadium (i.e. today's debate in Soldier's Field) than Barry Bonds hit a dishonest home run in one. Chris Dodd is a decent speaker, and I like his green tie. I'm sure he didn't mean it this way, but it's a nice nod to a color commonly associated with Islam. Hooray for Dennis Kucinich's proposal for universal, single-payer, not-for-profit healthcare plan. Thank goodness Dodd is talking about alternative energy sources, and that Edwards believes in an America where everybody gets a pension, period. What the Democrats are endorsing is salve for America's wounds of being left behind, neglected, and ignored by the Bush "administration."

From Here To Healing

Leaning reluctantly toward Hillary, slightly, and away from Obama. She charges through the debates like a freight train, and totally skewered Obama on his new foreign policy vis-à-vis Pakistan. She's the only one who sounds presidential and has more executive experience (albeit behind the scenes) and "Washington insider" experience than anyone. She is razor-sharp, though, and has the voice of a commander-in-chief. The others have to pretend that they aren't nervous, that they do know what they are talking about, but she really isn't, and really does, and it shows. And I love Dennis Kucinich, I have to say. He warms my heart because he fights for what he believes in even though he knows he'll never be elected. He's such a believer and tells it like it is. He's likable. Oh, and I'd take the nutty Mike Gravel over George W. What's-His-Face anyday, and twice on Super Tuesday. I do wish Hillary would get a different wardrobe advisor, though. ...

The End of Representative Governance

Cheney chided an interviewer during a recent cable broadcast by asserting that to govern, he only needs 50% plus 1, somehow leaving out that a razor-thin plurality does not give him a mandate to do whatever he wants. He is supposed to carry out the wishes of the people, not ignore them in favor of his own agenda.

NOT Bonkers for Bonds-O

I don't like Barry Bonds and I really don't care about his home run record. He is a dishonest, violent misogynist. No love lost here.

Bush: In Contempt of the American People

Dear Editor, The current Medi-Cal budget crisis reflects the nationwide healthcare debacle. A wide selection of health insurance companies deny coverage for conditions as benign as acne and asthma. They may as well include hangnails and toe fungus! Every American needs health insurance, so why bother with our current system, that only meets the needs of those who do not currently need nor have ever in the past needed care? The Bush Administration is not taking care of its citizens. It's an absolute outrage. We are murdering people in Iraq and murdering our own citizens, just by two different methods. And if you're not outraged, you probably need medical attention. We must not live in a society where the only people whose needs are met are those who are healthy enough to be able to meet them on their own. It's downright un-American.

No Disgrace Left Behind

The Bush Administration cut off funding for the Upward Bound program at Mills College for underprivileged Oakland youth. Speaking of Oakland youth, a 19 year old man is charged w/killing prominent journalist and activist Chauncey Bailey. Additionally, five people were murdered in Oakland over a 28-hour period that ended this morning. I hope the NRA is pleased that weapons are so readily available to the wrong people for the wrong reasons.

It's "Homicide-ing" in Oakland

Another homicide was announced today, this one almost assassination-style with the assailant using a machine gun or shotgun, wearing a ski mask, and having a getaway car (sans license plates) at the ready. It sounds premeditated. It happened near Lake Merritt, too, which is a pretty popular destination. How sad that the only thing that really caught my attention about the story is the ski mask. That's how common homicide is in Oakland.

An "Evil Office"

I cannot believe how uniformly cold, condescending, and just plain mean the folks from OIA are. It's like they think they're on a different planet and the rest of us aren't worth talking to.

Murdoch, Murdoch, and Murdoch

Rupert Murdoch is further consolidating his "evil" media empire with his purchase of the Wall Street Journal. Soon, if not already, Rupert's racket will be the only game in town. A contributor to "Countdown With Keith Olbermann" last night noted that while the Murdoch-owned New York Post loses tens of millions of dollars per year, its purpose is that of an outlet for Murdoch's yellow journalism. And of course, he can afford to keep a newspaper running that loses that much money. I guess his opinion is pretty important to him, as is his ability to broadcast it world-wide.
