A Shower of Love

Jen's baby shower took place today. It is SO hot here in Orange County. Our car said it was 110 degrees.

It was so good to see old friends, like recharging my battery. Everyone is doing really well, but we did talk about how heartbreak and tragedy are simply part of life. We've each had devastating things happen in our lives; from spouses leaving to death to breast cancer, multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer's, and mental illness. I felt a bit better after talking. Everyone is so concerned for my dad; it really meant a lot. He is so loved by everyone who knows him.

We saw Jen and Alan's house, which is beautiful and comfortable, and the baby's nursery, which has a Hawaiian theme. They have a GORGEOUS armoir that was a few hundred bucks on craigslist, rather than $3000 at Pottery Barn.

Jen opened present after present at the shower and it was such a warm, wonderful feeling as everyone "oooed" and "ahhhhhd" with each one. I got to meet some of Jen's friends and colleagues and neighbors, too, and our friend Danielle, from childhood, was also there, with her mom.

Jen's at the stage of her pregnancy where she's really "feeling" it--tired, etc. Her feet are swollen so I gave her a foot massage. She eats whatever she wants; it's so cool! She's in a great mood and very excited. Her ultrasound pictures are amazing.

this was my first introduction to "baby stuff." i've never really been close to anyone who's given birth, although lots of the girls i grew up with have. i just wasn't in touch with them; i hear about their news through my mom. it sounds really scary.

We all shared baby stories and it was so nice to go back to Jen's after the shower and catch up with each other.

Jen is thinking about having a doula at the birth. i think that's a great idea!
