Operation Swarmer

I can't believe that Bush has the nerve to continue to insist that all is going well in Iraq and, at the same time, to launch this major offensive against insurgent strongholds. Things are obviously not going well if we're launching the biggest incentive since 2003.

If things were going well, we'd be leaving. I also can't stand to listen to Scott McClellan lie through his teeth to the press corps about what's going on.

Congress just approved--what is it, $90 billion?--for the war. Unbelievable. Public schools are falling apart, street crime is rampant (in Oakland, we hear sirens and gunfire around the clock), people can't afford health insurance, Medicare is on the edge, and Bush is pouring money into another country that seems to be headed into civil war regardless of what we do or don't do.

What a legacy. Bush trumpeted democracy and freedom from the beginning with his stupid Iraq propaganda and our legacy will be creating a civil war and leaving. I think Saddam Hussein still believes he can drive us out and if things were to descend into chaos, he might just regain power (i don't think he will, but still).

I also cannot believe the rhetoric coming from the administration about Iran. It's the same stuff they said about Iraq. Rumsfeld was asked point blank at a Congressional hearing yesterday, by Senator Robert Byrd from West Virginia (I love that guy), if he could guarantee that the new spending bill would not be used for action against Iran, and Rumsfled squirmed his way out of answering.

Unbelievable.

U.S. forces, joined by Iraqi troops, on Thursday launched the largest airborn assault in nearly three years, targeting insurgent strongholds north of the capital, the military said. The Operation Swarmer was aimed at clearing 'a suspected insurgent operating area' northeast of Samarra and was expected to continue over several days.
