to feel healthy and energetic physically; to exercise "early and often"

to feel good about my body and my self

a foothold in the wide world, a sense of connectedness and control over my life. control is an illusion, i feel, but it's one we have to maintain in order to function. every now and then, when something bad or unwanted happens, we're reminded that we're not in control. but, most of the time, we can do our daily routine without that illusion being tested or shattered.

i am emerging a bit from my funk, and i'm glad i let myself have a funk. sometimes i have to fall apart before i can come together again.

in other news, i'd like to congratulate a friend of mine for having more than one article published in scholarly journals. quite a feat!

"Lullaby and Goodnight" when i was a kid, i had a mobile that played Johannes Brahms' lullaby. i can still hear it in my mind, sometimes, and i thought i'd share it with you. Speaking of things German, we eat our meals these days with a new foreign student, named Stephan. He is from Bavaria. He wants to go to a "real American sandwich shop" while he's here, and Lorien will take him to Berkeley to go clothes shopping. Very entertaining. Nice to have some "fresh blood," though it's really interesting getting to know Liz, who is a well-spoken piano player with a marvelous sense of humor. Reality check from just outside the barbed wire-covered gates of the college: sirens at 12:40am, gunshot at 12:50am. 9 gunshots in rapid succession at 1:30am. My paper is closer and closer to being finished. Must get up for midterm tomorrow!

attraction rather than promotion is my best marketing tactic and foreign policy. being me is the best way to draw others in and earn their interest. it really is that simple. title is a variation on a line from the movie "Field of Dreams." my hormones are changing and i'm wondering if they're responsible for my bone loss. i'm really anxious and worried about it. should i see an endocrinologist? can't wait to see pictures of baby kate, and i especially can't wait to meet her! i should make plane reservations soon to get a "fair" fare.

Trimming the Fat

weeding through my entire blog--there are almost 1400 posts! quality over quantity; getting rid of stuff that seems irrelevent or misplaced or superfluous or otherwise dissatisfactory. saw a great documentary on the History Channel today about Hitler's family. turns out there are still a few living in the US! they've also had a good series on the SS, but, most importantly, tomorrow night they start the entire " Band of Brothers " series! i never tire of watching it. literally! i'm 15 pounds lighter with muscle to boot. can't believe it. cutting sugar and flour really works. started bob tonight, just love it. i'd like to get the soundtrack. dentist on friday. i'd like to get my blog to about 1000 posts. quite time consuming. turning in is the answer, not out. growth, expansion, new life. it's about time. i am so stale, and i can hardly breathe in here. the window hasn't been open for ages, and i cannot feel fresh air on my face or see the out...
